Johannesburg and Gauteng Property For Sale

Johannesburg property is always highly sought after, by both the local and international buyer. We give you a brief summary and outline of the suburbs available in and around the city, as well as greater Gauteng.

Centurion Property

Irene – Wierda Park – Lytelton – Hennopspark – Eldoraigne

Strategically situated between Johannesburg and Pretoria, Centurion’s main access routes link it to all the major centres in Gauteng.

Traffic congestion aside, ideal area to live if you work in Johannesburg and socialise in Pretoria. Convenient ‘lock-up and go’ townhouse developments in the newer areas with stand-alone houses in the older, more established areas. Interestingly more than one in ten Centurion households operate businesses from their homes.

Centurion Mall and various other retail developments offer a wide variety of shops & restaurants with the popular centurion cricket stadium regularly hosting international test and one-day matches.

Midrand Property

Halfway Gardens – Kayalami – Midrand – Vorna Valley – Noordwyk

Situated halfway between Johannesburg and Pretoria, it is approximately half an hour’s drive from both centres.

One of South Africa’s fastest growing areas, Midrand is slowly creeping towards the southern perimeter of Pretoria. Midrand plays host to one of Africa’s largest conference venues, Gallagher Estate, and boasts an array of self contained business parks. Residential areas consist mainly of walled security estate/complex living.

Northern Suburbs of Johannesburg

Affluent and packed with shops and restaurants, the northern suburbs seem a world apart from the CBD and its surrounds. The northern suburbs stretch over 30 km from Parktown, beyond the N1 highway and into the Midrand area.

North of N1 – Fourways Property

Fourways – Paulshof – Sunninghill – Lonehill – Northriding – Dainfern

North of Sandton the suburbs continue for +- 20 km. Here you will find large domestic plots combined with shopping centres, country clubs and the increasingly popular upmarket cluster houses in walled security estates. This area has shown a huge property boom in the last couple of years.

Fourways Mall, Fourways Crossing and the popular Montecasino offers a variety of shops, restaurants and entertainment.

Traffic and access roads prove to be a problem in this area, but a major upgrade to the main arteries feeding this area is currently underway.

Below N1 - Sandton Property
Bryanston – Morningside – Rivonia – Woodmead – Sandown – Illovo – Hyde Park

Sandton is the typical northern suburb. A sophisticated, upmarket suburb, which houses most major financial institutions. It has become the retreat of choice for banks and large corporations, including the Johannesburg Securities Exchange, and is known as the financial hub of Africa.

It’s plush shopping centres, like Sandton City and Sandton Square and abundance of lavish homes makes it the premier Johannesburg suburb.

Suburbs Below N1 (excl Sandton)
Rosebank – Greenside – Houghton – Norwood – Westcliff – Parkhurst – Parktown

With the exception of Alexandra, these are prosperous areas with plush shopping malls and well-tendered parks as public meeting points. Most suburbs are close to major arterial roads and some of our countries best schools are situated here.

Most streets are lined with high walls and security gates, but places of interest do exist, such as the centres of the suburbs of Rosebank and Parkhurst.

Parkhurst is one of Johannesburg’s oldest residential suburbs and is one of the few places in the Northern suburbs where there’s an element of street life. These suburbs with their eclectic mix of shops, pavement cafes and continental feel have proved to be highly attractive and property is steadily being bought up here.

The Northern suburb of Houghton is one of Johannesburg’s wealthiest and greenest suburbs, popular in the past and at present with the city’s elite. Within this area also lies one of Johannesburg’s most gracious suburbs namely, Westcliff, with many historic Herbert Baker homes set in well established gardens.

Johannesburg South

Alberton Property
Brackendowns – Brackenhurst – Meyersdal

Alberton is approximate 25 minutes drive from Johannesburg International Airport and +- 15 km from Johannesburg.

A variety of shopping centres, clinics and schools are located in the different suburbs and Alberton also houses the Newmarket Race course.

Benoni – Edenvale – Kempton Park

The East Rand is a combination of industrial activity and the privacy and intimacy of small town living. The East Rand boasts with a world-class casino, Emperors Palace, with conferencing facilities and several international brand hotels. It also hosts the Johannesburg International Airport.

It is a self-contained, diverse area, home to people of various income groups.

North Eastern suburbs
Cyrildene – Observatory – Orange Grove – Fairwood

Some of the oldest suburbs lie in the North East and has large Jewish and Italian communities. Houses in these areas often still have their old world charm with their wooden floors and pressed ceilings.

Cyrildene has become home to a fascinating collection of Chinese supermarkets, businesses and authentic restaurants.

Johannesburg West

Randburg Property
Blairgowrie – Ferndale – Fontainebleau – Robindale – Randpark Ridge

Randburg contains 32 suburbs, most of them residential. Randburg is well known for Cresta shopping centre and entertainment areas like Brightwater Commons.

Residential areas cater for various income groups. Boomed off residential areas is a common occurrence as a means of security and adds to Randburg’s suburban feel.

Roodepoort Property
Allensnek – Florida – Ruimsig – Roodepoort – Horizon View

The Roodepoort region offers pleasant suburbs, many with superb views of the city to the East and the Magaliesburg to the West. There are ample open spaces, golf courses and commercial activity such as Westgate and Clearwater Mall.

Much like the East of Johannesburg, this area is self-contained, offering a variety of schools, hospitals and shopping centres.

Situated far to the West of the city centre, traffic congestion, despite the dual-carriage highways, can be problematic.

North Western suburbs
Auckland Park – Emmarentia – Linden – Melville – Northcliff

Tree lined streets and wide-open spaces make this an appealing area. Views from the higher suburbs like Northcliff, is a vista of treetops, attractive housing and parks.

The suburbs range from low to high income and many have a distinctive character. The most characteristic of this area is its diversity. Suburbs range from upmarket Northcliff and trendy Melville to Emmarentia and Linden as tranquil central suburbs.

Johannesburg CBD Property
Hillbrow – Berea – Yeoville

Grouped around the CBD are various suburbs that, despite their over population and sometimes illegal occupation by migrants from all over the continent, have their moments of architectural brilliance.

Successful efforts over the last couple years to clean up the streets of the CBD, to make them safe and reopen some of the neglected buildings are drawing businesses and tourists back into the CBD.
